The first day of the NAIAS (a.k.a. Detroit Auto Show) was a whirlwind of press conferences with the show’s new, compressed schedule. Still, this reporter made it to a number of them and also snagged a photo of House Speaker Pelosi who was shopping there today with her new friend Sergio Marchionne.
Right after it swept the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards (Fusion Hybrid and Transit Connect) Ford rolled out the 2012 Focus (pictured above). Designed from the start to be a “world car”, essentially this same car will be sold in this form in numerous markets around the globe. The C segment Focus will also serve as the platform for up to ten new models in upcoming years. It hits the streets in early 2011.
Buick/GMC gave a rather lackluster presentation on the new GMC Acadia Denali and GMC Granite concept. The Granite is billed as an Urban Utility Vehicle, is smaller than the Terrain and has an interior that can be configured in a variety of ways for buyers with “active lifestyles”. We’ve already seen the new Regal, so GM trotted out a Regal GS show car, with a turbocharged, 255hp direct injection I-4, all-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. It looks and feels like a solid product, but no plans for production were revealed.
Toyota showed a hybrid concept that they said would serve as basis for an expanded Prius line in the future but the concept was said to be so fragile that we couldn’t touch it and it did not appear on the show floor after the press conference, making me think perhaps someone broke it. We’ll see if it’s there tomorrow.
Volkswagen brought out their NCC (New Concept Coupe) concept car. Judging by its size and configuration it’s a safe bet that this is a preview of the next-gen Jetta, but VW didn’t actually say so. They also announced that the Chattanooga, TN, plant is well under way and should be up and running in just over a year. It represents a $1 billion investment and promises to create 11,000 new jobs.
Honda unveiled the CR-Z, a sporty, two seat hybrid, sort of a cross between the original CRX and the original Insight. Honda will start selling the CR-Z this summer and pricing information will be available later.
An unusually large crowd in the Chrysler area signalled the arrival of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi being escorted by Fiat chief Sergio Marchionne. She even got behind the wheel of a Fiat 500, leaving one to wonder when she last had actually driven a car. If you were wondering if the Speaker of the House gets Secret Service protection, the answer is yes.
